The Sd. Kfz. 251 makes a new outing from ICM with a 1/35th scale Sd. Kfz. 251/1 Ausf.B.

Review

This release from ICM that will always stick in my mind has a Hannamag thanks to Tamiya I believe, even though I know that that is not an accurate naming. This version of the vehicle is an APC version and arrives in a single plastic bag which is packed in a flip top cardboard tray with a separate card lid. With the vinyl elements in a separate plastic bag. The instruction booklet with the decals inside is loose in the box.

Having built one of the previous releases of this model, I can tell you that it is pretty much bullet proof as regards assembly. The only area that I struggled with was the viewing ports around the hull structure. The parts of the model have a pleasing level of detail throughout, and as long as they are cleaned up well they go together easily without the need of bucket loads of filler. ICM has chosen to supply this model with a full engine, and there is a nice large hatch to enable you to visually look at the engine when in place.

The front wheels are locked in a forward position however, the tyres and tracks are vinyl rubber which are not popular with a high number of modellers. The crew compartment has the driver’s instruments supplied as decals. Defensive weapons storage has been provided in the form of an MG34. The interior detail in the cab I find particularly pleasing with only the rear of the crew seat detail causing concern; which I think should have spring detail down the back. Bench seating in the rear has been included, and I look forward to seeing some crew members released in the future.

Personal weapons storage has also been included in this model, which is an aspect I approve of. The rear access doors can be set in the open or closed position but not operational. Track wheels are nicely detailed, and I see no issues with them. Plus the suspension swing arms are all provided loose and so can be set to any base you choose and as you have vinyl rubber tracks which also enables the model to be displayed on any surface. On the subject of the MGs the defensive ones are all present and a tripod mount for an anti-aircraft MG has also been included. A nicely detailed communications radio, however I do feel that there should be a headset provided. ICM has provided 4 finishing options:

Night Panzer Division, Balkans, 1941

5th Panzer Division, Romania, 1941

Eastern Front Late 1941

North Africa 1942

While this kit could still do with the addition of some photo etch to improve some aspects, It does appeal to me and is one that I would likely build.
